Yao Qingmei has imagined a mole-man living in a luxury hotel room. Unlike the troglodyte animal obsessed with the subterranean castle in Kafka’s short story «The Burrow», the carefree mole-man spends all day taking care of his long, beautiful nails, having lost all impulse to dig tunnels. His repetitive, meaningless daily actions even become an obstacle, as the long, beautiful nails become barriers. The short film deploys numerous shaky, blurred subjective shots, creating an anguish of confinement through excruciating close-ups, reinforcing a fragmentation and repetitive loop worthy of a broken dream.
