Introduction

Born in 1971 in Daishan, Zhejiang Province, Wang Qifeng graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at East China Normal University in 1995. He has been a faculty member at the College of Art and Design, Donghua University, since then, and currently lives and works in Shanghai.

Wang observes nature through the lens of the Anthropocene, regarding painting as a mode of thinking that allows him to sense and approach the natural world. Drawing on classical Chinese landscape painting and his own experience, he has cultivated a genuine, organic pictorial language that reinterprets concrete natural scenery through reductive forms, establishing in his compositions an order where nature and human activity coexist. His recent works attend to the ongoing transformation of landforms and the incessant flux of nature, exploring through painting the depth and nearness of time, as well as the interplay between remote geological landscapes and inner spiritual space.
