Introduction:
This catalogue was published in conjunction with Yang Fudong's solo exhibition titled 'Don't worry. It will be better...' at Kunsthalle Wien. In Gerald Matt's words, '(Yang Fudong's) films, videos, and video installations, and also his photographs speak of a fluctuation between worlds. His pictures deal with the to and fro among the world of Chinese traditions extending back for millennia, the fading heritage of the cultural revolution, and a current, voracious, ever-expanding capitalist modernity.' In his interview with Gerald Matt, Yang talks about his various video projects, his choice of media and how his works reflect 'life'.
In Bert Rebhandl's essay, he comments that in many of Yang's video works, the element of 'waiting' plays an important role. 'Waiting becomes for him a form of vita activa, but also a drama...'.
Sabine Folie talks about Yang's videos in relation to Chinese landscape paintings in her essay. 'His films live from intimation and allusions; they keep emotions floating and ambivalent...'
Included in the catalogue are foreword by Gerald Matt, short statement on each video and biography of the artist. A bibliography is also provided at the back of the book.
