Birdhead is an artist group (Song Tao & Ji Weiyu) , set up in 2004. They both work and reside in Shanghai.
The name Passions Bloom Ambitions (qíng fàng zhì dàng) came from Chinese poet Cao Zhi's poem, which advocates the strong will to prosper in secular world.
Similar as most works that Birdhead made before, all shooting locations and time span of the photos in the work are not planned. Just as the name “Birdhead” comes from a random knock on the keyboard and the computer auto-correction, when they wanted to create a name for a folder.
All these photos came from the thousands of films Birdhead took in working trips and rambles during the last 6 years, including Yellow Mountain and Guichi in Anhui Province, city of Beijing and Jiankou Great Wall, Yunnan Province, Zhejiang Province, Suzhou, Shanghai, Kyoto and Tokyo in Japan, Kamchatka Peninsula and Moscow in Russia, London, Stavanger in Norway. Each action of gazing and shooting cuts out a space and a time, which also becomes a self-reflection, and it is to say the thousands of photos are thousands times of self-reflection.
Birdhead refers to the traces from ancestors for their findings in the emptiness. And nature makes us miniscule and insignificant. Eventually any human attempts to challenge time will be destroyed by time. But accepting incidents and resisting time is actually the way to relieve the loneliness and void.
Therefore, to Birdhead, how to express the emotion is the most important thing. Through constant photo shooting, selecting and editing photos to create connection and rhythm, through studying the traditional and current techniques, fabricating and mounting photos, to eventually carry and express their emotions in the time we live in.
JI Weiyu (1980) and SONG Tao (1979) were both born in Shanghai, graduated from the Shanghai Arts and Crafts School in 2000.
