K11 Art Foundation and ICA, London co-present Zhang Ding: Enter the Dragon II
21 May – 30 June 2016
The ICA, London and K11 Art Foundation will collaborate to present the second iteration of Chinese artist Zhang Ding’s ongoing solo project titled Enter the Dragon II . The project will further develop Zhang Ding’s longstanding interest in 'the stimulating and chemical interaction between sound, stage and the immediate emotional response of the audience’. The first iteration of Enter the Dragon took place over 13 nights in October 2015 in the ICA Theatre. The space was transformed into an immersive installation that was a hybrid of a sci-fi discotheque and a futuristic super club. Occupying opposite sides of the space were two stages, partially obscured by rows of substantial spinning mirrors. Each night, a new pairing of musicians from different genres, including acoustic, ambient, drone, experimental, industrial, punk and techno, would improvise live on stage and in unison.
For this second adaptation of the project Zhang Ding will transform the space at the chi K11 Art Museum in Shanghai, by covering large areas of the interior with reflective surfaces and integrated amplifiers to create a site-specific ‘mutating sound sculpture’. For the duration of the project there will be a series of weekly performances, consisting of invited artists from Europe, the U.S. and Asia from a variety of musical genres and backgrounds. These events will involve the artists performing alongside audiences, as well as a platform for experimentation and self-reflection.
