Practice is pleased to present the second iteration of Joy Syringe, a two-part exhibition separated by the East river and 28 months. The first Joy Syringe (June 28 - August 2, 2014 at 321 Gallery in Ft. Greene) was focused on the pendulum quality an artwork takes based on the politics of the particular present moment – shaping definition regardless of intent. This time around, under the auspices of a very different political and societal climate, the works in Joy Syringe embody an unapologetic discourse of disruption, raising awareness in response to the contemporary crescendo of inter-social malaise and fetishization of reality. Joy Syringe administers a palpable distaste and exhaustion of the Old Dominion that just can’t seem to let go and accept a better way forward; one with almost no room or tolerance for the parasitic consciousness that shaped social fabric in the past.  

These artworks route away from the spectacle fetishes and violent outbursts teeming to the surface today and challenge those conundrums that showcase and show off an authoritarian flatness. Participating artists include: Akina Cox, Gilda Davidian, Gillian Davis, Michelle Dizon, Lyle Ashton Harris, Zhu Jia, Dave McKenzie, David Medalla, G. William Webb, and C. Michelle Woolery.
