On behalf of artist and Commissioner of the Antarctic Biennale, Alexander Ponomarev, we are pleased to invite you to the ANTARCTIC PAVILION to see the first results and highlights of the Antarctic Biennale and art projects inspired by the white continent.
Selected artworks created in Antarctica, along with photo and video documentation of the voyage, will debut at The Antarctic Pavilion during the 57th Venice Biennale of Art 2017. This group exhibition will include works by the expedition’s participants and projects from the finalists of the Antarctic Biennale Open Call for young artists.

The 1st edition Antarctic Biennale,founded by conceptual artist-philosopher Alexander Ponomarev kicked off on 17 March on this 117-meter-long scientific research vessel, Akademik Sergey Vavilov. This ship is conceived as a floating studio, conference and exhibition space. ShanghART represented artist Zhang Enli with his latest work “Egg” will board the ship with other more than 100 international artists and interdisciplinary researchers from Ushuaia, Argentina. In the 12-day long expedition, actions, performances, and debates were unfolded on board. During landings at various Antarctic locations, artists will temporarily install works of art, or engage in performances. The Antarctic Biennale continuted its voyage until 28 March.
