It is a great honor for ShanghART Beijing to invite the famous action artist He Yunchang, curator Jonas Stampe and artist Melati Suryodarmo to have a talk and share their understanding of the action art. The talk will begin at 3 p.m. on 30th, April. Focusing on Melati Suryodarmo solo exhibition - "I Love You" in ShanghART Beijing. These three guests will share their opinion of action art.
About the guests:
Melati Suryodarmo (b. 1969) is a visual artist currently based in her hometown, Surakarta, Indonesia, having lived and worked in Germany for 20 years. She graduated with a degree in International Relations from Universitas Padjadjaran Bandung, Indonesia, and went on to pursue a degree in Fine Art at Hochschule fuer Bildende Kuenste, Germany. Studying under the tutelage of renowned Japanese Butoh dancer and choreographer, Anzu Furukawa, and acclaimed pioneering performance artist and professor, Marina Abramovic, Melati eventually finished her post-graduate program in Performance Art while gaining the opportunity to perform alongside Abramovic with a group of students at the 2003 Venice Biennale. Known for her long durational performances, often involving highly physical acts and use of the body to convey her ideas regarding cultural, social, and political issues, Melati has performed across the world for 20 years, in festivals, biennials, galleries, and museums. Notable shows include the 52nd Venice Biennale Dance Festival (2007), Luminato Festival of the Arts (2012), Asia Pacific Triennial 8 (2015), Singapore Biennale (2016), as well as helming the Jakarta Biennale 2017 as the artistic director.
He Yunchang (b.1967 in Yunnan Province), now lives and works in Beijing. He began his action art in 1994. He is the most aggressive practitioner in the field of action art in China and his works are well-known for extreme reality and the spirit of aggression. In 1999, he became famous because of "Golden Sunshine". His representative works are "Keeping Promise", "Advance and Retreat", "Wrestling: One and One Hundred" and so on. He held a number of personal exhibitions in many places such as Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, National Gallery of Indonesia,Beijing Today Art Museum. He once participated in the 55th La Biennale de Venezia, Busan Biennial, the 1st Sharjah Biennial, the 10th Fukuoka Biennial and the 5th Yokohama Triennial. Furthermore, he received the Gold Award of the 2nd Yangtze River International Video Biennale, Yan Wenliang Art Youth Award, Chinese Contemporary Art Golden Palm, Action Art Award for International Exchange of the Museu de Arte De Macau, Chinese Contemporary Art Awards and the Bronze Award of the 9th National Arts Exhibition(oil painting).
Jonas Stampe (b.1965 in Gothenburg,Sweden) is an art historian and theorician, holding the position of Senior Curator and Senior Researcher at Red Brick Art Museum in Beijing. He has an established position on the scene of contemporary action art. He founded and curated the biennial of contemporary art in Gothenburg, Ideologia, in 2001 and 2003. Since 2005 he has founded and curated the following performance art festivals : Infr’Action in Sète, France (2005-2014), Live Action in Gothenburg, Sweden (2006-), Infr’Action Paris (2007-2010), Live Action New York (2009-2010), Guangzhou Live (2010-2014), Venice Live (2010-2017) and Beijing Live (2016-). He has totally produced over 51 international performance art events and curated more than 350 artists from 55 countries in a total of over 1800 performances.
