In 2019, Sun Xun went on his longest journey ever – he began to work on “Magic of Atlas”, a feature-length animation film.
An epic tale of a boy traversing six different countries in search of his original mind, “Magic of Atlas” consists of six chapters, each created with a different technique – such as woodcuts, oil paintings, cave paintings, and more – to make what may one day become one of the most mesmerizing Chinese animation movies of our time.
ShanghART presents a glimpse into Sun Xun’s “Magic of Atlas” world, including some of his most recent oil paintings via the Magic of Atlas Stop Space at Art Jakarta Booth A6.
The start of this ambitious work was made possible with the generous support by the White Rabbit Collection.
“Art can make people happy!”
– Sun Xun
Sun Xun’s films have been shown at the Venice International Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival, Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Holland Animation Film Festival etc. among other special screenings and film festival participations.
About the Artist
Sun Xun was born in 1980 in Fuxin in Liaoning province, China. He graduated in 2005 from the Print-making Department of the China Academy of Art. In 2006 he established π Animation Studio. He currently lives and works in Beijing. Sun Xun’s personal visual language consists of metaphoric imagery, dark and intense hand drawing, and dreamy narrative. In recent years, Sun Xun uses New Media Art as a point of origin to explore more possibilities within the expansive realm of visual art: he explores narrative methods using diverse mediums such as newspaper, book, woodcut print, Chinese ink, pigment powder, probe into non-linear expressions of time and space, and inquire into both realistic and fantastical representations based on his own understanding of society and sociological theories.
Sun Xun’s works were collected by many art institutions, including White Rabbit Contemporary Chinese Art Collection, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Kadist Art Foundation, Asia Society Museum, M+ Museum, etc.
