Organized with the aim of “casting a new perspective on our Western-oriented artistic outlook and our rigid view of Asian art” (from the foreword in the exhibition catalogue), this exhibition toured four cities in Japan. Until then, the presentation of Asian art in Japan had focused on works emphasizing tradition. In contrast, this groundbreaking exhibition presented new works by 17 artists from six ASEAN countries that had experienced rapid economic growth at the start of the 1990s. Two rounds of on-site surveys lasting over a month each were held as part of the artist selection process.
