33ml offspace is excited to announce that we will be launching a special programme for the space over the Christmas weekend: 'Painting Tiny Times'. We have handpicked 30 works by 30 painters, all of which are self-identified small-scale works.
The title of the exhibition "Painting Tiny Times" is inspired by the series of novels published by Guo Jingming in 2008. The story is set in Shanghai, a city with a booming economy, and portrays an imagined life of urban youth. The film was released 10 years ago. Nowadays, the semantics of "Tiny Times" seems to have quietly changed: all the glitz and glamour is settling down.
The exhibition "Painting Tiny Times" attempts to ask serious questions about the current "painting-economy" on two levels: there is no doubt that small-scale works are an important part of a painter's work, but what kind of existence are they for the painter? Why are they painted so small? Are they sketches? shorthand? Or gifts? How does the artist think and work within the square inch?
Secondly, we argue that the small format is a reminder of the role that painting - as an ancient cultural asset - has always played in the show-off economy. At a time when the art market is weak, is the small format the "coin" of the hard currency of painting? In other words, will small format paintings become the most sellable art commodity in the face of more "affordable" prices and sizes?
This Saturday, we invite you to spend the last art slot of the year with paintings!
