ShanghART Gallery is pleased to present "Riddle," a special exhibition in the South at MOORDN ART, opening 3 July, 2024.
Originating from ancient Chinese folk culture, riddles were initially passed down orally in a vivid and accessible manner. Over time, they gradually evolved to encompass a more comprehensive knowledge system. A riddle consists of two intertwined parts: the "miàn" (surface) and the "dǐ" (base). The "miàn" effectively conceals the "dǐ" through a series of rich, colorful, and intriguing rhetorical devices, indirectly guiding the audience towards the hidden object or concept at the core of the riddle.
The relationship between the "miàn" and "dǐ" cleverly reflects the artist's understanding and expression of contemporary art itself, while the interaction between the audience and the artwork corresponds to the process of guessing and solving the riddle. This exhibition showcases works by nine participating artists: Birdhead, Chen Wei, He Chi, Jiang Pengyi, Li Jiayi, Li Mingchang, Lin Aojie, Sun Xun, and Yang Yang. Each of these artists' creative trajectories has intersected with the concept of the "South." As "riddle makers," they translate stories related to the South in their own unique ways.
