ShanghART Gallery is pleased to present Metaphor at the first ART021 Hong Kong Contemporary Art Fair 2024 in Booth GF-02. We will be presenting 18 works from eight artists, GENG Jianyi, LIANG Shaoji, LIU Weijian, SUN Xun, YANG Fudong, YU Youhan, ZHAO Yang, and ZHANG Meng, one of our new collaborating artists. This exhibition explores artists’ self-explanation and artistic creation inspired by the subject of life through three themes in the artists’ most recent works: Sail like a Sparrow, Philosophise like a Silkworm, and A Portrait of the Group.

Sail like a Sparrow
“Sparrow on the Sea II” is YANG Fudong’s brand new ‘architectural film’.  Shot in Hong Kong, the black-and-white film weaves together scenes from seaside villages and nocturnal city streets. “Sparrow” refers to the birds that gather on the seashore and is extended to a synaesthesia impression of the city of Hong Kong. It is also a symbolic metaphor for the viewer who seeks to surpass themselves and gathers the courage to sail off like a sparrow. The film incorporates multiple motifs from the artist’s past works including, suitcases, robed guests, and swimmers. YANG’s understanding and thoughts on time is the inspiration of the film. Artist ZHANG Meng experiments with various mediums; her use of childish lines paint the chaotic combination of consciousness, dream, and memory which reflect the artistic embodiment of free consciousness.

Philosophise like a Silkworm
In LIANG Shaoji’s “Blue”, the blue tiles, when covered in silk, are faintly visible. The combination of the two materials takes inspiration from the Tao, “In the shadow there appears to be an image; In the shadow there appears to be a real being”. The abstract philosophy of the shadowy vagueness has been visualized through the work of the artist. Similarly, in the series of circles by YU Youhan, he uses repetitive black-and-white lines to compose an abstract image, tracing back to the spiritual core of the Tao. YU’s work shapes the exploration of spiritual meaning into the eternal visual philosophy of the artwork.

A Portrait of the Group
Sun Xun’s new series Parallel Circus describes similarity in collective experience between the world in the past three years and a circus. The image of a group in ZHAO Yang’s work and LIU Weijian’s depiction of a single person in “The Night Alone” describes our collective confusion of the times.
In GENG Jianyi’s “Overlapping Lightening”, the faces of the overlapping characters form a relationship of “you within me, and me within you”. The artist compares the individual experiences of life with the similar collective situation which triggers further thinking and resonance with the audience.
