What is Life?

This fundamental question has been continuously explored by thinkers, artists, and scientists throughout history. The definition of life has expanded beyond a simple biological framework to become a profound philosophical inquiry that encompasses the relationship between humans and all living beings. Today, humanity is confronted with the "Anthropocene"—a new geological epoch marked by the significant impact of human activity on the Earth’s environment and ecosystems.

However, there is now a growing call to move beyond this human-centered era toward a new ecological paradigm known as the “Symbiocene”—an age of symbiosis that emphasizes the interconnectedness of all life forms. The 10th Daegu Photo Biennale explores the relationship between nature and humanity, the cosmic position of humans, the visible and invisible realms, and the boundaries between the human and the non-human. Through a wide range of artistic practices, this year’s Biennale raises questions about the diversity, fragility, and resilience of life. It aims to provide a space for critical reflection on the meaning of life in contemporary society.
