In August 1986, after attending the Zhuhai conference, Artist Mao Xuhui and Zhang Xiaogang, Pan,Dehai, Zhang Long and others set up the " Southwest Art Research Group". The group was dominated by artists living in Kunming at the time, but its influence later spread to Guizhou, Chongqing, Sichuan and Yunnan. In October 1988, " 1988 Southwest Art Exhibition " was held in Chengdu. The exhibition was attended by Zhang Xiaogang, He Duoling, Mou Huan, Yang Shu, Shen Xiaotong, Gu Xiong, Mao Xuhui, Pan Dehai and others from Yunguichuan area. After the continuous emergence of exhibitions and research on the Southwest, the Southwest Art Group has become a special force in the development of Chinese contemporary art. Until more than 20 years after the new century, the tradition of Southwest art still has its vitality, and has been continued in the youngest generation.
Compared with the art groups in other parts of China, the Southwest Art Group has formed some distinctive features of its own artistic creation: First, Painting occupies a very important position in the Southwest art group; second, the importance of life itself or the intuitive feeling of life, Is another characteristic of the Southwest Artists Group. The situation away from the political and economic center makes the artists living here more self-centered and naive in their creative thinking. The influence of minority culture is very obvious. In addition to being far from the center, the Southwest region is also home to many ethnic minorities. Their culture is an important source of visual elements for Southwest artists to complete their artistic creation. Maintained close contact, but also always have a certain distance. This is more clear in the younger generation of artists, globalization and integration of the various regions of the country, Today's people live in a time space, information space are very similar era, young people can not refuse the external influence, But Southwest artists also try to retain the influence of local regional culture on them.
At present, the influence ofglobalization is more and more powerful, but its negative effects are more and more serious, especially the proliferation of cultural homogeneity. So, at this moment, we go back to the place, back to the Southwest, to look for some of the regionalcharacteristics of the young artists who are active in these areas. It is in part a resistance to the homogeneityof globalization. In particular, the development of Chinese contemporary art, in the center of the influenceis more and more powerful today, perhaps the regional re-attention, It is an important way and mea ns toobtain artistic freedom and various possibilities.In addition, the emphasis on regional issues is also the resistance to macro-narrative, so thatart back to the micro-perspective, backto the individual perspective. Of course, this is not to say that the promotion of artists only in theregional cultural system to find the future, but hope that they are in an open mind, To find differentfrom other people's cultural characteristics, attention has nurtured their own cultural soil. Whether facing the international center or the domestic center,do not have to blindly follow. This is just as artists should respect their own hearts, whether in the face of trends, power or markets. Regional characteristics, after the baptism of globalization, will also be in the younger generation of the body, with a new face to show.
