Artist Liu Yi and anthropologist Shiho Satsuka’s work 'Matsutake Lead the Way' was specially commissioned by the *Nieuwe Instituut (Netherlands) and presented as part of the exhibition 'FUNGI: Anarchist Designers'. The project was realized in close collaboration with anthropologist Anna Tsing, architect Feifei Zhou, and scientist Toshimitsu Fukiharu, who served as the scientific advisory team.
The work tells the story of how matsutake mushrooms shape landscapes—a process that spans deep time and unfolds in the present, existing both above ground and extending into the subterranean world.
