ShanghART will present the group exhibition “House Tree Person” at ShanghART SUHE in Shanghai from July 10 to August 21, 2026. The exhibition brings together works by twelve artists: Chen Xiaoyun, Chen Zihao, Dong Bingqing, Gao Lei, Li Qinyang, Liu Lijuan, Liu Yucen, Lu Yu, Wilhelm Sasnal, Zhang Meng, Zheng Xue, and Zheng Yiran.
As a classic exercise in psychological drawing assessment, the traditional House-Tree-Person test asks subjects to render on white paper, in pencil, a drawing that includes a house, a tree, a person, and other ancillary elements—a projective device through which one may probe the subject's unconscious, interpersonal dynamics, and current emotional state. In this exhibition, however, the artist's medium is no longer confined to pencil and paper but expands into material painting, sculpture, installation, fibre art, photography, and participatory performance, transforming the gallery into a portal for exploring internal psychic terrains. By presenting the outcomes of House-Tree-Person tests outside the consulting room and within a public setting, the exhibition seeks to dissolve the boundary between diagnostic report and introspective artistic practice. Countless drawings are filed away in case folders; every sand tray, once arranged, is smoothed over; their entire purpose is fulfilled within the clinic. This exhibition, by contrast, endeavors to turn those silenced soliloquies into active, articulate self-examinations.
