Shi Yong's video work "Untitled" and sculptural installation "Resolve Everything Using Beautiful Form--00B" are currently on view at our Annexe space.
Projected alongside an actual bookshelf, the gradual erasure of the details in "Untitled" is contrasted against the quiet and present books on the shelf, comprising mainly of catalogues and publications of artists from the gallery roster. The abstraction evokes the fading of memory as the relation between memory and reality is being examined through the presentation of the work within this space.
Across the room, "Resolve Everything Using Beautiful Form--00B" sits quietly in the corner. Part of a series of work developed around the motions of space, material and language, the act of erasure is present in this work through the concealment of text along the sculpture. While the Chinese characters are not fully covered by the aluminium strip, what is revealed is barely enough to make out a coherent sentence, leaving viewers to engage in the artist's message through their own interpretations.
Taking on a physical form, the shape and emanating light seem to also suggest hidden meanings, or perhaps they are just beautiful forms used by the artist to conceal what needs not to be expressed.
