From 17 June to 02 October 2005 will be held in Montpellier the first edition of the International Biennial of Contemporary Chinese Art, Montpellier-Chine 1 (MC1).
'MC1, a biennial unprecedented'
This Biennial is the first large-scale event organized outside China and dedicated exclusively to contemporary Chinese. Implemented by a team of experts led by Franco José Frèches, Commissioner General, MC1 actively supported by the city of Montpellier, the Metro Area Montpellier, in the Languedoc region Septimania, as well as the Council Hérault General. An international jury, consisting of 7 members, chaired by Jean-Hubert Martin, Director of the Museum Kunst Palast in Dusseldorf (Germany), will award the Grand Prix MC1, the Special Jury Prize and the Prix Discovery.
'Why such an event in Montpellier? "
Together since 1981 with the city of Chengdu (Sichuan Province), Montpellier and the surrounding region, internationally recognized for their cultural ambitions, considered an event of this magnitude would be likely to strengthen further, during the summer months, their cultural influence , as well as Montpellier Danse or the Festival de Radio France. Today, on the world stage, China is asserting itself in all fields, including the arts. A phenomenon which has resulted in new expressions plastics, both Chinese and universal by their quantity and quality. Seduced by the Chinese cultural dynamism, Montpellier decides to host Chinese contemporary art biennale with a "tailor-made" to be not only a major event in cultural calendar 2005, but also an engine to strengthen its ties with China.
'Official Selection, 36 artists'
36 Chinese artists from China, Taiwan and across Europe were selected for the official selection. Among them, fans will find the major international figures as well as to expose new talent for the first time abroad. Different means of expression are emphasized as painting, sculpture, installation, video, photography, performance, and new interactive media.
'Honor to Blue House and Tribute to Chen Zhen'
The Biennale MC1 is organizing an exhibition called "Focus Chengdu." Bolitho, artists of the movement "Blue House" in Chengdu Castle 0. At the Chapel of Mercy, MC1 paid tribute to the exceptional artist Chen Zhen.
'MC1, a permanent collection'
The Biennale MC1 commission to artists, to the extent possible, work is original and specific, which will also inaugurate the permanent collection of the city of Montpellier. The city aims to eventually create the merits of works by contemporary Chinese art the largest in the world outside China. The Biennale provides through its network of museums, art centers and the twin cities to organize exhibitions in the most prestigious museums in Europe, the United States and China.
