Concave-Convex Cube is a large steel cube produced by artist DING Yi and was displayed as a project in the Seventh Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale. Though carved and hollowed, it maintained the form and the function of a cube. Sited haphazardly around their main body, the scraped away portions served as outdoor seating for visitors. While inside of the cube which has been carved into an open space, both sunshine and people were allowed to go through. It thus became a space for "meditation in the city and a transitable path in community which invites pausing, resting and experiencing." The same as Austrian artist Joseph Dabbeh Nick (also a participating artist into this sculpture biennale), DING Yi employs a simple style to express strong personal temperament and boldly explores the language of sculpture as well as the pleasure in his creation and daily life. Having been repeatedly for a long period of time——almost a whole lifetime——and refined and enhanced over and over again, the simplest visual elements line through every single detail of DING's creation and help to forge an extraordinary impression and his personal system. From the point of view of the curator, these two artists, living in different spaces and coming from different eras, however have been creating and thinking in a parallel manner.
