Time of the dragon presents exciting and topical contemporary art from Asia. The artists of the exhibition are living and working in Shanghai and Peking in China and in Taipei in Taiwan. Time of the dragon continues the series of annual exhibitions of contemporary art for children and young people produced by Rauma Art Museum. Guided tours and workshops are an essential part of these exhibitions
Dragon is an ancient symbol of Chinese culture. According to the Chinese zodiac calendar this year is the year of the dragon. China is currently going through times of great changes; huge economic growth, globalization and cultural transformations are visible in everyday life of the people and in working of the artists. History, mythology and traditions are reflected in the Time of the dragon exhibition and also changes in common people's life in China today.
Works of twelve artists are presented in the exhibition. Collages and papercuts of Chen Hangfeng follow the tradition of Chinese art, but details and materials are surprising. In his works tea cups of the workers of a Chinese workplace are projected on the walls and soap bubbles enclosed in cage are striving towards heights. The interactive work of Lin Jiun-Ting brings forth a magic dragon flying in the clouds. The works of the artist couple Ji Wenyu and Zhu Weiping use textile as material of their works. In these elaborate works anonymous, almost identical doll-like human figures contemplate their relationship to nature, tradition and society.
Time of the dragon exhibition is based on the curatorial residency of museum's curator Henna Paunu in Shanghai in summer 2011. The residency is organized by HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme. In the exhibition is presented also a work by Finnish artist Jaakko Karhunen made also during his residency. In the exhibition Karhunen appears as pseudonym Lao Baixing. As a part of the exhibition Chen Hangfeng's exhibition will take place in the Cable Gallery in Helsinki in January. Some works of the Rauma Art Museum exhibition are presented in springtime in the Oksasenkatu 11 artist collective's gallery.
Rauma Art Museum has produced exhibitions of Finnish contemporary art for children and young people since year 2002. These exhibitions have been very popular. A guide will accompany all the visiting groups and introduce the works to the audience and also workshops have been included. This exhibition is supported by the Alfred Kordelin Foundation.
