This exhibition imagines a fictitious romantic encounter in the gilded age of Shanghai (Du Yueshen era) where the two opposite ends of the social spectrum meet in a passionate, mysterious, and tragic romance. As the next installment of MABSOCIETY's CON.TEXT series, which situates art events outside of the traditional art space or "white box", The Rapture of Romantic Illusions explores the possibility of breaking the boundaries between contemporary art and daily life. Set amongst an environment which recalls both the highlife of old Shanghai as well as futuristic luxury, these artworks act to evoke the narrative of a timeless romance. It is an imaginary love story plagued by deceit, espionage and seduction. Bringing together works of photography, film, painting and installation from some of today’s most interesting contemporary artists, this poetic display matches intriguing art with a lively surrounding.
Artists include: Yang Fudong, Jiang Zhi, Qiu Jie, Zhou Tiehai, Jiang Pengyi, Sun Hongbin, Fang Wei, Zhuang Hui, Gao Weigang, etc.
