‘Out of the Box - The Threshold of Video Art in China brings together works of 14 Chinese artists, which were created in the last decade of 20th century in need of breaking out of the boundaries that were defined by a set of restrictive rules and social conducts. It is this series of works and the artists that have prompted the realization of the exhibition. Outside of their studios and using video as the new medium, the artists focused directly on what was around them, and have developed a new perspective that is even more vital for today’s art production. ’The above statement by Pi Li, curator of this exhibition, gives an outline to this historical retrospective and its relevance to the current cultural, artistic and social context.
Some of the works in this exhibition have never been shown to the public before. By collecting, reorganizing and presenting these works, the situation when Chinese artists just started to pick up the video cameras and shoot has been reenacted. Archival images and documentaries are supplemented as informative materials. Furniture of bureaucratic style from the period of central planned economy is implemented to create a unique atmosphere of that time.
