In recent years, artist ZHANG Enli turned his attention to the exploration of what has been called "Space Painting", From a non-profit space in Antwerp in 2007 to recent K11 exhibition in Hongkong, his Interest in the "space" seems unabated. This time he turned to the “SHANGHAI NIGHT CLUB” to held his solo exhibition.
“SHANGHAI NIGHT CLUB” is a commercial entertainment space, a bustling city in miniature, its inclusion in this exhibition is elaborately designed and also a bold exploration and experiment on the display environment. Fonder of “SHANGHAI NIGHT CLUB” QIAO Zhibing is one of the most important collectors of Chinese contemporary art, the site of exhibition this time is the “art theater” on the second floor of his “SHANGHAI NIGHT CLUB”. Differing from the previous exhibition in “white box”, “SHANGHAI NIGHT CLUB” is a colorful environment, it’s a new attempt.
The exhibition is entitled as “Hair”, which presents about 30 pieces of paper works and more than 10 pieces of “Globe” installations by ZHANG Enli from 2002 to 2014. Maintaining his personal style, these works rage from the earliest portraits to latest space painting, bring us a glimpse of ZHANG’s path of creation on this traditional material. The hand-painted “Globe” animates the whole exhibition more than being a touchable embellishment. what is worth mentioning is that, figures and still lifes juxtaposed in the upcoming exhibition, the artist seems to be inclined to create a scene, tell a monologue, or provide a clue. Whether it will produce a conflict or a subtle echo between a straightforward commercial space and the quiet even hide artistic language by the artist? Let us wait and see what will happen.
