Shanghart 796 on Huaihai Road is the fourth exhibition hall of Shanghart in Shanghai. Its building area is around 300 square meters, located in a lane full of cultural atmosphere. The exhibition hall’s walls are all French casements, breaking people’s impression that art is closed, showing the most sincere and true aspect of art. 

As the opening exhibition for Shanghart 796, the whole show is a collection of works of 14 artists which removed each artist’s distinctive feature. The diversity of the works wiped off the boundary of every art work and brought you to our daily world. 

In this exhibition, Ding Yi’s painting and sculpture repeated the CROSS endlessly, which seems to lasts for 18 years. In his vision, his target seems like a cautious and strict system. 

While in Geng Jianyi’s works which were created through different ways, they seem to concentrate on personal identity. And he never stops the exploration for the issue of self in present world. 

The works of Liang Shaoji are most installations which he made the silkworm spit on and wrap different goods. His works usually use silkworms as imagery to clear up the violence, cruelness and sadness. And told people to be diligent and struggle. 

As for Xue Song’s works, ash means the implication of fate to him, the symbol of transmigration. So fire plays the most important role in his works. The ash and relic become the decisive element in his works, from some of the image seems as they were burnt. 

Sun Xun’s main works were always made in black and white animations which impressed us with doubts. In these works, he explored how the history was built and described. Here, he used our thought towards the time, described the history and made newspapers, books or other document as the background. 

The group exhibition will also show the works by Pu Jie, Tang Guo, Tang Maohong, Wei Guangqing, Wu Yiming, Yu Youhan, Zhang Enli, Zhou Tiehai and the beautiful panda T-shirts by Zhao Bandi. Hope you can feel the plenty art’s involvement in it. 

796 Huaihai Road used to be Film Shanghai. She witnessed the wonderful times of Shanghai. Nowadays she annotates the luxurious and leisurely fashion of modern times. Her name changed from Xiafei Road to Huaihai Road now. The landscape around her transforms with the times. Her dignity and glory, conglomerating the culture and history in the past century, will last for good.

The traditional British Garden, close to the gate, pours the special traditional western sense in 796. Shanghart Gallery, behind the garden, with the tensile force of transcending time and space, illuminates each profile of art with strong sense of space.  

Introduction of ShanghART 796 Space

Shanghart 796 space will put more emphasis on taking advantage of the space itself, in the way of noting and integrating, with nostalgic and delicate senses of scattering, in the themes of Shanghai, both past and now to plan out related series of exhibitions. Preliminarily plan to hold about ten exhibitions every year, and will present more excellent art works in the form of sculptures and videos.
