SHI Tao (1642－1707)
Shi Tao was born as Zhu Ruoji and courtesy name as Shi Tao. He was born in Quanzhou County in Guangxi Province. Shi Tao is one of the most famous individualist painters of the early Qing dynasty. Together with Hong Ren, Kun Can, and Zhu Da, the four are collectively known as “Qing Chu Si Seng (Four Monks in the Early Qing Dynasty)”. His early landscape paintings drew inspiration from masters of Yuan and Song dynasties, which resulted in the sparse and refined painting style. In his later years, bold brushstrokes, free ink movements and characteristic compositions were the main features of his works, especially reflecting upon his fine album sketches. The figures he created are raw, simple and unadorned with unique styles.
The original The Sixteen Luohans was Shi Tao’s earliest major extant work.
