Shan Hai Guan

Shanhaiguan is a part of the city of Qinghuangdao, in Hebei province. It is one of the major passes of the Great Wall of China. Throughout Chinese history, it served as an important transport and military fortress, a frontier of defence against tribes from the north, and also an important pass for the people who migrate from the inner land to the north border in the later years. The photos selected show a local taxi driver who migrated from the northeast, and depicted the track of the immigrants' corresponding life today to the history through his daily work records. Once the
Great Wall was the site of many conflicts and wars, now it becomes a popular tourist destination. Once horse carriage was the only transportation, now new immigrants drive taxi to take the tourists around. The photo works mean to seek a connection between the phenomenon of immigration and the development of social economy.
