I always think of the China Academy of Art, founded by Lin Fengmian, as the school from which modern Chinese art stemmed. It was Lin who turned to the West in a bid to reinvigorate the stagnant Chinese painting tradition. His famous students Zao Wouki, Wu Guanzhong and Chu Teh-chun were all successful in synthesizing Western art and traditional Chinese painting. Do you see yourself as continuing this development?
It is very hard to say whether the history of art is subversive or continuous .I think we are more relaxed to face this proposition relative than our predecessors , Human emotion has symilariotic regards different cultural backgrounds therefore were not be . most of the time will not cause obstacles to understand art works .
When I was in college , the whole society was still very conservative. The college is like a skylight, it let me see the outside world .
The library has a lot of foreign periodicals and foreign filmes which we called "internal film". Mr. LinFengMian sure didn't know that his forwardthink can benefit us so far.
1. Which Western artists do you admire/are you inspired by? Are you at all influenced by Chinese artists? If so, which?
There are many artists I admire . Such as now I see the” Richard long “type of stone in Scotland in everywhere.
Mr. Long is a very lucky artist, Can walk around to people can't reach, at the same time, easy "wake up" the audience where they couldn't close by place. Also like Gonzalez-Torres ,who can smoothly put his private emotion overlap to common consciousness. What a Perfect intervention!
You had mentioned that Mr. Zhao wuji who I heard two lectures by him in our college.
what I remember very clear is: he said the reason he can success is his domestic schoolmates stop drawing early , he stay in French always eat very good , so he can still draw a lot of paintings will energetic.
If conditions permit, I also want to like my predecessors, will not stop working in my life.
2. Your subjects are mainly interiors, some once very grand, others more modest. Are these imaginary or are you inspired by real buildings? Where are they? In China or in eg Paris?
In China, we can often come into contact with very rich landscape, from the most luxury false to the most chaotic depressive, it’s continues rechanging. No realistic touches, the imagination is also limited, But I am eager to design my own space system, rather than simply copy would I see.
Sometimes I will go to find the real buildings. Sometimes I Can't go to the scene, I also rely on the Internet, like virtual tour and so on.
3. Often the places seem dilapidated, almost in ruins. What are you trying to convey by depicting such places in your paintings?
The ruins to give a sense of security is no pressure living space, you will do anything in it.
Abandoned places at the same time also became open to public , you can enter to visit it, this action is very similar to see artists process, I want to find traces of the reserved, not this place now what, the best is: this place once what lasting survived, noone can take away. And it is not visible.
