Art Project
2011.11

Daily life geography The art project was named as the physical site of Jianchang Hutong in Beijing and its specific entries and exits, the wood impediment installation was produced for the purpose of separation or self-separation. Called JU MA (i.e., mobile barrier) in ancient time, they were disassembled after completion and printed blurry ornamentation with distinct cultural symbols. Then, they were left outdoors at various public locations in the Hutong, rendering a status of being "useless". As time went by, the wood was gradually appropriated by local residents for alternative purposes. The "object" with violence preinstalled and performing the function of separation thus dissolved unnoticed into everydayness.
