ShanghART Portman
In the early summer of 1996, after having organised several art projects and exhibitions at different places, ShanghART established its first stable space in the lobby of Shanghai’s Portman Shangri-La Hotel. During the "Portman Period" (1996-1998), ShanghART held 13 solo exhibitions for 9 artists at the hotel and other spaces.

Website
In 1998, the independent gallery website www.shanghart.com was launched. The website was
a window to disseminate ShanghART's information to the world. In 2004, the website was upgraded to
the current site www.shanghartgallery.com. Over time, the website has become a comprehensive database of ShanghART, documenting 4000+ exhibitions, 20000+ artworks, 2600+ publications, and hundreds of texts and e-books about the artists ShanghART has been collaborating with.

1999

In the Spring of 1999, ShanghART relocated to Shanghai Fuxing Park. A space smaller than 100㎡ was renovated and divided into exhibition, storage, and office space. Until the early summer of 2005, ShanghART held more than 40 solo exhibitions in this six-year-time of "Fuxing Park Period".

Warehouse
In 2000, ShanghART rent an old warehouse (No.113 West Suzhou Road) along the Suzhou Creek for storing and displaying artworks. At the same time, many artists set up their studios around this area.

June  ShanghART participated as the first gallery from Greater China in Art Basel. Till 2017, ShanghART has participated consecutively for 18 editions in Art Basel.
June  Public welfare activity Come and Meet the Panda held at Parkson Plaza, Shanghai. Series works of Zhao Bandi and the Panda showed at Pudong International Airport and Huaihai Road in Shanghai
July  Zhang Enli’s solo exhibition Dancing opened at ShanghART Fuxing Park

In 2004, ShanghART set up the H-Space as the second space at 50 Moganshan Road (bldg.18). H-Space measured more than 700㎡ and allowed large-scale works to be exhibited properly. Until late 2016, 51 solo exhibitions and more than 20 themed exhibitions were held in this space.

In 2006, the warehouse at 50 Moganshan Road (bldg.16) was renovated and divided into ShanghART Main Space with 215㎡, office area and a back garden.

F-Space
In the early summer of 2007, ShanghART opened a new space at No. 800 Wujiaochang, an emerging art zone neighboring Fudan University, so therefore the space was named "F-Space". F-Space was dedicated to present the works of many emerging artists.

In the spring of 2008, after preparing for half a year, ShanghART unveiled it's first space outside of Shanghai, ShanghART Beijing, in Caochangdi Art Zone, Beijing. In Autumn, the fifth space "ShanghART 796 Huaihai Road" was opened in Shanghai.

ShanghART Taopu

In 2010, ShanghART transformed a 3000㎡ warehouse space inside the building no.8, TOP Art Zone into ShanghART Taopu to archive and exhibit large scale works. Over 30 large scale installations were exhibited in the viewing room the same summer.

ShanghART Singarpore
In the autumn of 2012, ShanghART Singapore was opened in the Gillman Barracks, the landmark of Singapore contemporary art, which is the first ShanghART space outside of China.

ShanghART ranked as No.1 gallery in Top 10 Influential Galleries of China, listed by BAZAAR Art.

In the early autumn of 2013, ShanghART H-Space in M50 reopened to the public after renovation. The space was equipped with an improved exhibition hall, and established an office area and archive room.

In the autumn of 2016, ShanghART moved to its new building on the West Bund named ShanghART Shanghai. ShanghART's 20th anniversary exhibition Holzwege was held on both exhibition floors of the new gallery. ShanghART closed its space at Moganshan Road (later reopened in spring 2017 as ShanghART M50).
