•Ding Yi:
Light and Space
Option ONE
Ding Yi: Space and Light (3 sculptures and 2
paintings by one single artist)
Idea: The whole project will be done by one
single artist.
Reason: There have been many projects with art
at public places in Shanghai in the last few years. Money has been spend, things
put in place. But mostly the artworks didn’t get much attention and hardly a
building in Shanghai is specially known for the quality of the art.
There is to much compromise in selecting the
artworks, the artworks are to scattered, unrelated. Not done in one single
spirit, the artworks hardly can add to - or react to – the strong architecture,
the artwork remain decoration.
So, Option One is a clear, modern, minimal and
daring project where all the artworks are done by one single artist, Ding Yi,
perhaps the most important abstract artists in China today.
To give the whole project to a single artist
would need a courageous decision, could provoke some discussion, but it would
give the Azia Centre a clear artistic identity and underline the architectural
unity of the building.
The Idea: Space and Light
Ding Yi developed his artworks from the
outside to the inner space of the building: from static, massive,
3-dimensional on the street side to more dynamic, light, 2-dimensional next
to the lift; from half-old / half-modern at the outside to totally modern
and vibrant in the centre.
The artwork
A1) 180x180x400cm, 4000kg
B)
180x180x300cm, 2000kg
C)100x100x400
cm, 1800kg
Material: steel plate (8cm wall
size, hollow) painted or rusty
The Artist: Ding Yi, born 1962,
studied at the Shanghai School for Art and Crafts (where he teaches today)
and at the Shanghai Art Academy. He has shown in most museums in China,
incl. National Gallery in Beijing, Shanghai Art Museum, Guangzhou Art Museum
and his works have also been shown widely around the world: e.g. in the
Beyeler Foundation, Venice Biennale, Yokohama Triennale etc. He is probably
the most radical and important abstract artist in China and is included in
almost every survey on Chinese art today. His sculptures stand in the SOHO
building in Beijing, in the LianYang Development in Pudong and in Qinghua,
Zhejiang.

it would be an unique chance for a talented
artist in mid career so we can be sure that he would create an exceptional
work. The single artist solution can easily be transmitted to the public,
journalist etc. and it could put a standard for future projects in Shanghai.
