This captivating and intricate installation is based on an amalgamation of grand narratives and small narratives, the rethinking of history, and a famous Thai sweet.
Using as a launching point the motif of thong yod, a supposedly Thai dessert made with egg yolks, the story of its origins is reconstructed within the piece—from the wooden frames made from the beams of an Ayutthaya-era house to the thousands of teardrop-shaped, floating brass pieces forming a 3-meter hanging orb.
An homage to the earliest years of globalization, Golden Teardrop is demonstrative of how the fates of people and things, and of nations, are shaped by complex, transnational chains of action, agency and chance.
