Introduction:
This is the catalogue for Li Shan's solo exhibition at the Hong Kong Arts Centre. The show featured works produced by Li Shan during the period 1976-1992, which include the 'Origins' series in which Li showed his fascination with the art of ancient civilizations and primitive cultures; the 'Rouge Empire' paintings in which one finds grimacing folk characters, political figures and fantastic oversized lotus flowers painted in bold and exuberant colours; and works from the 'Li Shan's Fairy Tale' series in which the artist was trying to find a new path in his artistic development. Wu Liang's essay in the present publication traces Li's evolution during this period of time while Liao Lu's article offers a study of the artist's floral paintings. A biography of Li Shan is also included.
