ShanghART Gallery is pleased to present new works by Zeng Fanzhi, Zhou Tiehai, Zhang Enli and Wu Yiming, along with Xu Zhen, who has been selected to participate in Art Unlimited Booth B3. Works by Yang Fudong and Yang Zhenzhong - the only artists from China who will participate at the main exhibition of this years Venice Biennale (with '7 Intellectuals in Bamboo Forest' part I-V, resp. the 10 screen installation 'I will die') - will also be on display along with works by Ding Yi, Geng Jianyi, Li Shan, Pu Jie, Shi Yong, Feng Mengbo, Yu Youhan, Zhao Bandi, Ji Wenyu, Wang Youshen, Xue Song and Liang Shaoji etc.
Zeng Fanzhi will present a new large scale painting in his iconic Hero series. Dong Cunrui articulates a terrain of uncertainty that inhabits both character and landscape depicted. The grand scale of the painting lends it a certain suggestive and sublime appearance that evolves and creates new particular impressions of fragility and vulnerability.
Zhou Tiehai’s unsettling yet amusing practice includes appropriating classical imagery and actively subverting painterly craft through his air-brush techniques. His laconic trade mark – the camel – is represented in two new paintings Mata Hari Mata Hari and Thomas while the sculptural objects Judge, Diplomat, Minister illustrates Zhou Tiehai’s investigation and mockery of culture’s historical baggage at large.
Zhang Enli’s subtle depictions Road Lamp, Two Cups, Space I, and Hair portrays details from ordinary objects that are often neglected or downplayed in conventional painting. In his meticulous claim of ’the real’ it is not the repeated image of documentation that is central to each painting, but rather the process of reflecting on the objects that led him to it.
Zhang Enli, Zhou Tiehai and Zeng Fanzhi will be present at Booth J7 at the ART 38 Basel.
