Live performance of ‘I Love You’
22 January 2026
4pm – 7pm
UBS Art Studio (Level 1 at ART SG)
For ART SG 2026, the UBS Art Collection will present Melati Suryodarmo’s ‘I Love You’ (2007), a tense five-hour choreography of balance and emotional insistence, in the UBS Art Studio at Level 1 of the fair. Suryodarmo moves through a stark red room carrying a large sheet of glass, chanting “I love you” in a continuous loop. While the color red is often associated with love and passion, it also evokes a sense of urgency and danger. The glass, fragile and heavy, becomes a metaphor for emotional vulnerability and burden. Through repetition and physical strain, the performance transforms the phrase into a ritual of longing and resilience.
Suryodarmo is known for durational performances that push the limits of physical and emotional endurance. These performances are rooted in Javanese heritage and shaped by her training in European performance traditions. Suryodarmo explores themes of memory, experience and transformation with her body. Her works unfold slowly, demanding sustained attention and evoking contemplation, discomfort and empathy.
