The inaugural exhibition at ShanghART Beijing Upstairs focuses on a selection of works by artist Xiao Wenjie, drawn from the 2025 series entitled 'Lump'.
Since 2022, the artist's practice has evolved to incorporate lines and forms, diverging from the earlier approach of exclusively layering blocks of colour. This evolution has culminated in the emergence of the visual motif of 'Lump'. Upon initial encounter with the 'Lump' series, viewers frequently perceive a sense of visual ambiguity. This ambiguity does not stem from the delicate, almost illusory interplay of soft brushstrokes, but rather from the precarious equilibrium achieved after media of differing properties have repeatedly contended with one another on the canvas.
In February 2026, ShanghART Gallery’s Beijing space officially inaugurated its second exhibition venue, Upstairs, an independently generative project venue that operates alongside the gallery’s main floor exhibitions. Through the lens of case studies, Upstairs delineates the praxis trajectories of artists, highlighting experimental and thought-provoking tangents outside the central narrative. It seeks to revisit those generative details found within the realm of daily practices and observations.
