Between a living plant and a sheet of paper lie countless intermediate states. These states encompass the plant's changing ecological and cultural contexts, its lifespan, and its evolving forms of growth. They also include the processes and gestures of papermaking, as well as the encounters and separations that occur with materials, people, and the surrounding environment throughout the transformation from plant to paper.

These intermediate states point not only toward intention and purpose, but also embody their own centrifugal potential and tension. They suggest hesitation, pause, deviation, disorder, and suspension. In other words, once the paper pulp has been lifted from the vat, it may be spread evenly and left to dry, eventually becoming a sheet of paper with a warm, delicate surface. Alternatively, it may be sorted, gathered into bundles, compressed, piled, stretched, twisted, or reshaped, preserving the traces of an entirely different sequence of gestures.
