Aranya Art Center and the Seashore Library are pleased to present a solo exhibition by Chinese artist Han Qian, featuring the video work In the Silence Between the Tides (2022) alongside two installation works developed from the film: Sheltered, Resting I and Sheltered, Resting II (2023).
In the Silence Between the Tides focuses on a mountain range stretching for more than one hundred li in Xuanhua, Hebei Province. Through the imagined perspective of a piece of ore, the work traces the geological memory and historical transformations of this landscape in the form of an epistolary dialogue. It follows the site's layered history—from the speculation surrounding "red stones" in the early twentieth century to the gradual decline of the steel industry today. As people departed and the ore was abandoned, accumulated identities and memories continued to shift, transform, and return in new forms.
Through this work, the artist seeks to open a space for reflecting on individual identity and its relationship to history, revealing how multiple temporalities and spatialities intersect and become entangled within a specific landscape.
