The self and the individual have always been among the essential foundations of art. Yet today, when images have replaced the real world and human beings themselves have become functionalized as images, the self and individual subjectivity are increasingly being dissolved. Against this backdrop, the return and renewed prominence of the 'I' in moving image art acquires a far deeper significance. Contemporary artists must inevitably position themselves as participants within this reality, critically reflecting on a world suppressed by technological images. Through their work, they rediscover the layers of time that have been obscured and reveal the multiple latent selves that remain waiting to be uncovered.
