The Near, The Far
Group Exhibition Gallery Where, Beijing
Date: 09.08, 2024 - 10.09, 2024

Artists: HAN Qian 韩倩 |

Since the tenth century, Chinese landscape painting (shanshui) has incorporated multiple viewpoints into a single pictorial plane. Through the temporal transformation of space—its multiplicity, overlap, parallelism, and interweaving—it established a fluid mode of viewing, allowing painting to become an inquiry into the equilibrium of time and space.

With the development of linear perspective, however, the scientific representation of space gradually reduced the temporal order within the picture to a singular dimension, separating time from space. It was not until the rise of philosophical movements such as transcendentalism in the eighteenth century that space-time was once again understood not as an objective framework of representation, but as a subjective structure of perception, returning to a fluid mode of viewing. The subsequent development of video and installation art further transformed the objectified consciousness of spectatorship in a more systematic way.

Gallery Where is pleased to present the group exhibition Near, Far, opening on September 8, 2024. Bringing together works by Chai Mi, Han Qian, Li Weiyi, and Zhao Yu, the exhibition explores the simultaneity of spatial experience through diverse artistic strategies, including the recomposition of images, the use of long takes and mise-en-scène, the interplay between the physical and the virtual, and the relationship between text and material installation. Together, these practices open a stream of space and time that transcends the order of empirical reality, inviting viewers into an expanded experience of perception.
