This exhibition focuses on a generation of emerging artists born between the late 1970s and the early 1990s, offering a selective survey of their recent practices. Through this sampling, it examines how this generation of Chinese artists who have studied and lived in France responds to questions of fluid identity, exceptional conditions of space and distance, and other issues that arise within today's cultural context.
The lived experiences and artistic practices of this generation differ significantly from those of their predecessors. Many have shifted their attention toward more personal and pluralistic contexts, emphasizing the free development of artistic language and the exploration of diverse media, while embracing uncertainty and experimentation. Some begin with reflections on personal identity and everyday life, using ordinary actions, familiar scenes, and streams of images to examine the self. Their works reveal both a playful sense of humor and a heightened sensitivity to the world around them. Others work within transcultural contexts, drawing upon personal experience, lived identity, virtual existence, and memory to investigate questions of social identity, collective memory, and consumer culture. Still others construct open-ended theatrical spaces for both self and other through dreamlike collages of memory and reality, dialogues that transcend time and space, or bodily encounters and visual narratives that move between "here" and "elsewhere."
Bringing these concerns and experiences together, the exhibition presents works by more than ten artists across video, game-based media, and photography. Together, they offer audiences a rich and thought-provoking exploration of the ways contemporary artists negotiate identity, space, memory, and belonging in an increasingly interconnected world.
