This exhibition was held at the Smith College Museum of Art, May–September 1982, as part of the Alumnae College programme 'Tradition and Transformation in East Asian Cultures'. It comprised paintings and sculptures from the period 1978–1981, during which a great deal of experimentation was tolerated in China. Cut off from international currents for thirty years, artists, and especially those of the younger generation who had little or no formal art education, hungered for interaction with the outside world. The exhibition included works of artists never previously shown outside of China.
