In the gallery’s courtyard, a lightbox installation by Robert Zhao Renhui stands alone in the empty concrete space. The work features photographs of weeds taken by the artist in urban environments. Sprouting from cracks in pavements and walls, their presence attest to an understated but vibrant ecology coexisting with human architecture.
The magnified images on one side of the lightbox allow us to appreciate the complexity of these tiny plants, while the shades of green taken from the plant fill up the other side, providing an intense and amplified aesthetic encounter with their hues.
