The Untethered Ashes is a narrative film that follows a fisherman possessed by a ghost whose ashes drifted across the Pacific from an eroded cemetery on Vancouver Island.
Blending fiction with ethnographic research, the film employs speculative storytelling to revisit sites and lives left undocumented through the historical amnesia surrounding early Chinese trans-Pacific migration. Through the fisherman’s hallucinated journey — linking Shandong Pennisula and Vancouver Island, WWI labor drafts, and familial memories.
As a whole, the film stages an intergenerational encounter, paying tribute to migrant bodies whose unresolved traumas continue to haunt contemporary landscapes.
