"When I think about the end of the world, I often picture a bright light. In our last moments, we recount all of the things that make up the world as we know it that will now be gone. A button, a bird, toothpaste, a ball of string, a book, a spider, a shoe, a lightbulb, a paperclip, a fish. All of the things we touched, used, saw, bought, loved and threw away. Every single one of them in front of our eyes again for one last time." - Lai Yu Tong

The World (Postcards) is a series of postcard-sized works made by Lai Yu Tong between 2023 and 2024. Drawn with soft pastels and a kneadable eraser, they depict things encountered in person by the artist during this period. Accompanying these works is a soundtrack composed of various industrial hums produced by machines around us-cars, trains, fridges, air conditioners-and several benches made by the artist himself.

First presented at the Esplanade Tunnel, the work transformed the Tunnel into both a portal and a waiting room, considering the act of passing through as a way to think about living and dying in this world of ours.
