DE STIJL is Dutch for "The Style", also known as neoplasticism. It means all the artworks from 1917 to 1931 founded in the Netherlands. The group's probably most famous member was the painter Piet Mondrian. They tried to express a new utopian ideal of spiritual harmony and order, and wanted to reach a pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and color.

(Quote from Artinfo interview with SHI Qing: These words are the art concepts raised by some radical art groups at that time. Now nobody uses these "dead" words. Getting these words translated doesn't aim to reproduce histories but to compare them with today's realities and meanwhile put our works in the historical context. )
