Overturned Bronze (Bronze revirado)
Brazil | 2011 | video installation, HD, 16:9 (vertical screen), single channel | 4’52” | loop | colour | stereo | dark room
The Festive Bell Ring is performed in a church tower in São João del Rey, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The motionless bell, weighing approximately one tonne, is pushed by the bell ringers’ bodies and, with increasing speed, turns in its own axis for a few minutes.
The video installation translates this event, often considered only through its audio aspects, revealing a kind of pagan trance – in spite of being intrinsically religious – which emerges from a violent, abrupt, repeated and physically risky effort by the bell ringers.
