ZHANG Ding was born in 1980 and graduated in 2003 from North West Minority University. Entitled 2003.05 which indicates undoubtedly either the beginning or the end of a period of time, this work is not only the first piece to be created since he became an independent artist, but also the last easel painting ever produced. Since then ZHANG Ding mainly works in the field of video, photography, installation and performance. Themes including marginal groups, immigrates, circulatory system, playground, theatre and consumerist society and so forth came on the artist’s stage. The strong atmosphere invoked by him is usually a mere ploy, and the meanings behind are never fully articulated. Interestingly, here one finds little difficulty reading these intriguing qualities from some traces and touches preserved on the canvas.
