“Float ” is a series of black-and-white photographs I made at the lottery in a town near my village during October 1-4, 2000. The lottery, which had almost been prohibited, was like a town festival; noisy and dreamlike. “Piao” means “floating” or “lightness of being”, but also “movement without order”. When I looked at the workers as they began to clean the streets filled with lottery wastepaper and the leftovers of fireworks, the town seemed to be covered by varied clouds: miraculous, dark, floating or ominous...
