ShanghART Gallery will present the group exhibition “Light Delayed” on May 16, 2025 at SIMPLE ONE Art Space in Beijing. The exhibition will utilise a variety of media, including photography, installation and video works, to illustrate the creative perspectives of ten artists. These artists will explore the texture of time, the trajectory of memory, and how the image becomes a gateway to the past and the future.
Video has emerged as a pivotal medium within the domain of contemporary art, transcending its original function as a technical means of retaining visual information. The utilisation of this medium by artists, encompassing documentary filming, fictionalised scenes and narratives, and absurd films, microcosmic worlds and abstract presentations of life thinking, is indicative of its multifaceted nature. This diverse range of artistic expression serves as a conduit for social observation, introspective exploration of self-existence, and the preservation of memories of times and collective experiences.
In the course of technological iteration in the domain of photography and video as a medium of artistic creation, from the anxious anticipation during the image development process to the arbitrarily alterable keystrokes of computer rendering technology and the practical application of AI technology, image creation is unquestionably one of the most efficacious tools for exploring the subject of destiny.
The veracity of life and the essence of the world, much like light and time themselves, are perpetually deferred in their manifestation. When the viewer captures the individual's reflection and attitude towards life, society and ecology in the works, the artists not only enact incisive cuts through contemporary reality, but also assume the role of messengers capable of reframing time and space that can deconstruct time and space and send messages to the future.
